10 Self-Care Tips for Spring
Here in the UK, Spring has truly sprung and we are already into May! We have daffodils popping up everywhere and warmer weather making an appearance. For most Spring is a time for renewal and refreshing and what better way to start than with these 10 self-care tips for Spring.
Go For a Walk
This will forever be my top suggestion. There is nothing better than a relaxing walk outside. It helps clear your mind and it’s free so no financial worries to go with it. You don’t need to walk anywhere fancy; it doesn’t need to be a secluded wood or a mountainside. Pop on your shoes (and clothes obviously) and take a walk around the block a few times. If you work in an office, have a wander on your lunch. I tend to spend lunchtime walking around town. I’ll eat at my desk while I work. I admit isn’t the best, but I can’t walk and eat.
2. Work in the Garden
Spring is a great time to start working on your garden. Now, I’m not a horticultural expert by any stretch of the imagination but, I enjoy planting flowers. Spending time there helps you relax and feel productive at the same time. It also helps you get outside and take in some fresh air, without leaving the comfort of your actual home. If you don’t have a garden, you can always get a small window box or just get a lovely bunch of flowers for your house. Flowers not your thing? Why not try growing some fresh herbs in your kitchen, to use in your cooking?
3. Read Outside
There will always be a book mentioned somewhere in a blog post here! Take your love of reading outside! You can read in your garden, in the park or even in a beer garden. There is literally no end to your options. Just remember, if you are spending lots of time outside in the sunshine, please make sure you are using sun protection. Take it from a ginger! (The advice. Please don’t steal sun protection from ginger people! We need it!)
4. Go on a Date
I know, but bear with me. Taking yourself for a date can be so rewarding. Just having alone time in general, especially if you’re part of a couple, is great. (Don’t worry I’m not offending James; we’ve discussed this at length) We spend all day, almost every day, together and it can be overwhelming. So there’s nothing wrong with taking a few hours to yourself. Okay, this isn’t a date but just as an example, when I work in the office I spend my 30 minutes rushing around trying to decide what I want to eat and usually end up with the same thing every time. However a few weeks ago the weather was so nice I decided to buy my lunch in the morning. Then I took extra time for my lunch to sit in City Square and just enjoy the sun, listening to my audiobook. Just the extra half hour in my own world felt so relaxing and I was less stressed by the time I got home.
5. Foot Masks
With the warmer weather coming in, it means sandal season will soon be upon us. So what better time to try a foot mask? I got a couple of these for my birthday and they are AWESOME! I’m not going to lie, it feels a bit weird at first and for most of them you can’t move about while they are on but, that’s fine. It’s a perfect excuse to sit on your butt and relax. Hell do a face mask at the same time. Just remember to grab any drinks and snacks first.
6. Spring Clean
Self-care doesn’t just mean your body. Having a good clear out can be very therapeutic. Clear space, clear mind and all that. I love clearing out stuff I don’t use, the space it frees up is amazing, the only problem (for me) is finding the energy to do it. Once I get started I’m not too bad but the initial push to do it is a struggle. If the things you are getting rid of still working/not damaged, why not try selling them online to make a few extra pennies or, if you’re not worried about that you can always donate them. I have a massive pile of clothes that are due to go to the charity shops.
7. Decorate for Spring
I know a lot of people who like to decorate for each season…sorry…I’ll rephrase that…I watch a lot of YouTubers who decorate for each season. I’ve never tried it, but I love the idea of it. Giving your house a wee makeover every few months, without completely redecorating. The best thing is, if you use things like flowers or garlands, you can store them until the following applicable season. If you use fresh flowers, you can compost them. Win-Win!
8. Change Up Your Wardrobe
Speaking of changing things up, it’s time to put those thick winter woollies away and dig out the lighter stuff. Now here in Scotland it’s still a bit chilly but I always have a hoodie lying around anyway. I recently learned how to be comfortable in my own skin and started to find my own style again so I’m looking forward to seeing what Spring wear I can dig out of my attic.
9. Get a Bird Feeder
I love my bird feeder. It’s a simple thing I got from Tesco and I get a “gardeners friend no-grow” birdseed to refill it. Sitting watching the birds can be so relaxing and on sunny days I often find myself just sitting with the patio door open, listening to them singing away to each other. We also have a few bird nests around our garden, so we are never short of visitors. Millie isn’t bothered by them either, except a massive pigeon she’s had a few goes at trying to catch. Don’t worry Bege the pigeon remains safe.
10. Drink More Water!
This is a tip and a note to self. We should really drink more water all year round, but a lot of people struggle. I always struggling to remember how much it is we are supposed to be drinking but a few months ago I bought an awesome water bottle. It has time marks on it, so you are drinking enough each hour. Just fill it up in the morning then at about 2pm if you’ve kept it up, you just refill it and by 7pm you’ve drank your days quota.
So that’s it! If you have any more tips, please comment them below! If any of these work or don’t work for you let me know that too!
