Blogtober Day 24 - 5 Tips for Walking Your Dog in the Dark
Dog owners have a duty to their pets to exercise them no matter the weather. Obviously, there are limitations to this regarding temperatures, health etc but generally, most dogs get two walks a day. With the darker evenings and mornings coming in it can be difficult to get out safely for you and your dog. So, I thought I would share some of my tips for walking your dog in the dark.
Get a Light Up Collar and a Torch
The number 1 rule when walking in the dark is to be seen. Walking with no lights whatsoever is such a bad idea. If you can adjust your schedule to walk them when the sun is up then all the better but if not then it’s so important that cars can see you, especially if you walk near a road. We have a light-up hoop for Millie so we can see where she is, even though she is attached to a lead. I also carry a heavy torch so I can see where I’m putting my feet.
Get Your Dog a Coat
A coat for a dog is essential on colder nights if your dog needs one. Millie is obviously a breed that has no body fat or thick fur to keep her warm. Getting a warm, well-fitted dog coat can really help. Even better if it has reflective strips on it.
Wrap Up Cosy
There is no point in getting a coat for your dog and not dressing for the weather yourself. Perhaps you don’t need the full kit but a warm, waterproof coat and a scarf can go a long way. Deep pockets for all doggy walking essentials are a big plus too.
Walk With Someone
I know this isn’t possible for everyone but if it is for you, then my advice is to do it. If you have a partner or a friend that can walk with you that’s great. If not, why not try to find a dog walking group that does nightly walks, or start one yourself? Most communities now have a Facebook page and a quick message on there to ask if such a thing exists can go a long way.
Take Plenty of Poop Bags
Not strictly to do with nighttime walks, but imagine walking in the dark, with no torch and you step in something that should have been picked up. This is bad, even when you can see where you are going! Please please please take plenty of poop bags, pick up after your dog and put it in the bin. If you run out or forget them ask another dog walker if they have a spare. I’ve helped lots of people in this situation and have been in it myself. You will find that most dog walkers carry more than one, just in case.
