If you are like me, then around 2000, you discovered “The Sims by EA (* whispers * Challenge Everything”) If you didn’t, then you knew someone who did. To this day, I still play The Sims 4 and I love it just as much as I did then. The fun, weird scenarios, the ability to make your dream family, the unrealistic expectation that you can have a successful medical career if you play chess for a few hours a night and have an excellent work/life balance! It’s crazy! I’ve wanted to do this book tag for months but never got around to it. However, with the recent announcement by EA that they are working on “Project Rene”, thought to be the long-awaited The Sims 5, I thought this was a great time to do it! This tag was originally created, to the best of her knowledge, by Booktuber, Hailey in Bookland so let’s get started!
The Original Sims: The Best Author Debut
“Frail and Brittle Bones” by D.A. Robb is a brilliant debut novel. Telling the story of Agnes living alone in the mountains, when an eldritch horror-type monster starts killing everything around her. Horror is NOT my favourite genre but this was the first horror I gave 5 stars to. The one downside? It’s the most challenging cover to photograph on Kindle! I can’t wait to read the prequel!

The Grim Reaper: the saddest character death
I really struggled with this question. I was stuck between this death and a “death” in the book after this one. Ultimately, I chose David Sands, because the character in the next book, you know it’s not a real death so it makes that aspect easier but the conversation they have before it kills me every time. Anyway, David dying in this book is so heartbreaking because it’s so unexpected and he doesn’t de how you think a member of St Mary’s would die which makes it even worse!

Sims Getting Stuck: a character that just gets in the way
Hanna from “The Library at the Edge of the World” is such a pain in the ass. You could literally take her out of the story and it would have absolutely zero effect. She’s a selfish, moody cow who doesn’t even like the bloody library. Plus she’s a total bitch to her mum for no reason whatsoever!

Simlish: a book with amazing writing
Okay so “amazing” is may be a bit strong but I loved the writing in “The Supernaturalist”. Eoin Colfer uses Cosmo’s fresh eyes to world build and it makes you feel like you are on this adventure with Cosmo and his friends. The story is interesting and I loved the twist.

Expansion Packs: a series that just kept on getting better
Ahh! Karen Rose, an author of many a romantic thriller. What I love about Karen Rose’s books is the familiarity of them with the added twist. Do they all have the same romantic storyline? Yes yes they do BUT that’ is the comforting safe space between the thriller side that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I love that all of her books are linked, despite each series being set in different cities.

Sims Romance: the worst-case of Insta-love
“Holding Up the Universe” by Jennifer Niven. Not only is it an unbelievable case of insta-love it’s also a very unbelievable relationship. Jack and Libby should have absolutely remained friends. This is a hill I am willing to die on!

Cheats: a book that was entirely unrealistic
It’s no secret that I am not a lover of “the classics” but Jane Eyre is one that I cannot wrap my head around, why people like it so much. A young lassie meets a miserable older man and, despite him willingly going to make you a criminal (without your knowledge of course) still wants to marry him! It’s also incredibly boring. Nothing particularly exciting happens, and the ONE thing that might have been exciting is so bloody unrealistic it pushes past exciting into ridiculous.

Needs Fulfilment: a character who made all the wrong decisions
I know I am probably in the minority but I can’t stand Valkyrie Cain. Everything, literally EVERYTHING that goes wrong in the Skulduggery Pleasant series is her fault. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! She never learns, either. No matter how many times she does something or plans to do something stupid and thinks “I’m not going to tell Skulduggery, because I’m badass because I’m Valkyrie Cain” I think, “Oh here we fucking go!”.

Error Code 12: a series that started off great but went downhill from there
I loved Conn Iggulden’s “War of the Roses” series. The first three books were amazing and the narration of the audiobook was on pointe! Then, the fourth book started and it just wasn’t the same. It felt so rushed and wasn’t particularly interesting. Don’t get me wrong, I would absolutely listen to them again but it will never be a full 5 star series.

The Sims Vortex: a book/series that completely engrossed you
I realise this book is part of a trilogy but I haven’t finished it yet. “Scythe” is a brilliant read and one that totally drew me in. I’m really looking forward to reading the next two and they are sitting on my bookshelf teasing me, but I have so much to read first!
